Van crashes into Wash Common house

A WASH Common woman had a lucky escape yesterday (Wed) evening, after a van crashed into a Wash Common house and neighbouring garage.

One fire engine from Newbury Fire Station was called at 7.27pm to Glendale Avenue, after a white VW Crafter van crashed into a link detached house. A heavy rescue unit was also called to the scene, along with another fire engine from Tilehurst, Reading.

A woman inside the house was shaken, but unhurt, according to firefighters at the scene.

Firefighters evacuated the property and threw a cordon around the area, before stabilising the vehicle and also calling a structural surveyor to the scene.

The front wall of the house was damaged and also a window sill/window.

The garage, belonging to a neighbouring property was also structurally unsound.

The surveyor said the house was safe to stay in overnight, according to firefighters.

Firefighters left the scene at 9.30pm.

A spokesperson for Thames Valley Police (TVP), Connie Primmer, said police were called at 7.15pm:

"No one has been arrested or charged in connection with the incident at this stage and no one was injured. Enquiries are ongoing." said Ms Primmer.

The road was closed throughout the incident.

Ambulance services were also at the scene.
