Vicar's tribute to Aldworth's 'conscientious' churchwarden
Michael Soames had been an active member of village life and was at the forefront of conservation at St Mary’s Church.
His efforts helped to raise and secure over £150,000 from charities for numerous projects, ranging from the refurbishment of windows and bells, to the stone effigies of the medieval De La Beche family, known as the Aldworth Giants.
The Vicar at St Mary’s Church, the Rev Will Watts, said that his thoughts were with Mr Soames family.
“He was a faithful member of services and church life and I will particularly miss his conscientiousness and organisational skills,” he said.
“I’ll remember his smiley face and very welcoming nature and his willingness to take on projects. He has left a big hole in the church and the village.”
Mr Soames died, aged 62, following a heart attack and a memorial service for his friends and family will be held in July, in the City of London, where he had a lot of contacts during his career as a chartered surveyor.
His work for the church continues, with donations going to St Mary’s.
