Discussions on the relocation of three Victoria Cross memorial stones are ongoing, with further ideas being proposed.

With the relocation of the stones, that currently sit in hardstanding in Thatcham Broadway, town councillors have suggested the movement of the interpretation panel.

The interpretation panel was erected in 2019 to join the stones which have sat in the town for over six years.

In previous town centre committee meetings there has been consensus that the stones be raised on to a plinth in order to both preserve them and keep them in a well-attended area within the Broadway.

It was decided that the stones be moved to an area where they would not be stepped on, but they will still attract the interest of passers-by.

Councillors in a town centre committee meeting recently discussed the importance of relocating the stones in an area that would not be blocked by the Christmas tree that sits in the Broadway during the holiday period.

It has also been suggested that a sign is placed at the current VC stones location which points to the relocated stones once moved to their new home, still in the Broadway.

It was proposed that a flagpole is sited with the relocated stones with a Union Flag flown at all times.

It was also suggested that a Thatcham Town Council flag could fly alongside it when commemorative events are not occurring.

The Victoria Cross is awarded for most conspicuous bravery, some daring or pre-eminent act of valour or self sacrifice, or extreme devotion to duty in the presence of the enemy.

The Thatcham VC stones were laid to mark the feats of three Thatcham Victoria Cross recipients, Second Lieutenant Alexander Buller Turner, Lieutenant Colonel Victor Buller Turner, and Lance Corporal William House.
