Victoria Park grass fire suspected arson
According to Richard Young, watch manager of Green Watch at Newbury Fire Station, one pump from Newbury was called at 4.30pm to the park, where a small grass area was reportedly alight.
After searching the park for the blaze, firefighters discovered it had been extinguished by the people who spotted it and alerted emergency services, after seeing a group of youths acting suspiciously in the park.
Firefighters left the scene at around 4.45pm, after informing police the cause was suspected arson.
The Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service (RBFRS) has issued safety warnings on the dangers of lighting fires on grass, or open heathland, in tinderbox conditions, due to the heatwave over the last two weeks.
