'Tiger Woods' mayor opens Newbury Adventure Golf in Victoria Park

A new mini golf course in Victoria Park opened this morning, prompting many Newbury residents to test out their putting skills in the spring sunshine.

The 18-hole Newbury Adventure Golf is located next to the tennis courts and will be open throughout the Easter holidays.

Mayor of Newbury Billy Drummond was on hand to officially open the new community attraction and likened his golfing skills to Tiger Woods when he sunk his putt for a birdie on the fourth hole.

He said: “I think it will bring great value to Victoria Park, it will be quite good for families to spend an hour-and-a-half and it’s a really good set-up, with friendly people. I found it really enjoyable.”

The course has a British wildlife theme, with various animal models such as a fox, snake and donkey scattered around the holes.

It also features some exciting obstacles, including a large loop-de-loop on the 17th hole and a classic mini golf windmill on the first.

Sharon McIntyre, from Newbury, who was playing a round with her husband Robert, said: “When we saw them building it we thought it’s the one thing Newbury hasn’t got and how good that they’re building it. It is great fun.”

Mr McIntyre added: “I think Newbury has loads of stuff that really caters to the community. It’s really good.”

Newbury Adventure Golf is made from sustainable and natural materials and with no concrete being laid during construction, so the course won’t negatively affect the land in Victoria Park.

Abii Pass, who was present at the opening this morning, praised the sustainability of the project.

“Because it’s all wood they can take it all away as if nothing’s been here, so they haven’t damaged the park, which I think is really good for the environment,” she said.

The course is currently open for school holidays and weekends, but Newbury Adventure Golf director Christopher Aubrey hoped the course would be able to open seven days a week when better weather permits in the summer.

Mary Lettis, another local resident who was enjoying the new town attraction with her family, said: “It is a great addition to the park. It brings the community together, it encourages people to be outside, and it’s just really nice.”
