Victoria Park tennis courts set to reopen for summer

Popular courts have been closed since September 2014 due to subsidence damage

VICTORIA Park’s popular tennis courts in Newbury could soon be back in use.

Newbury Town Council were forced to close the courts in September 2014 when they became the latest victim of subsidence damage in and around the park.

In September, the council said it had taken the decision to close them until further notice as the surface was “deteriorating and unsuitable for public use”.

However, last week the council said it had recently inspected the condition of the courts’ surface to establish what minor work could be undertaken to allow them to be used this year.

It added that it hoped to start the work by the end of May so people could play on them during the summer.

Cracks and subsidence in the park and surrounding area appeared shortly after Costain conducted water extraction works when building the Parkway shopping centre’s underground car park in 2010.

The town council launched legal proceedings against Parkway owners Standard Life Investments shortly after the damage appeared and the ongoing dispute has so far cost the taxpayer in excess of £100,000.
