Victoria Park to get £23,000 makeover
The work will include replacing the three benches around the pond with six new benches and pruning the 67 lime trees either side of the two footpaths.
The cost of pollarding of the trees is £19,562 and is likely to take place in February 2015 for a minimum of two weeks.
One footpath will be closed at a time to minimise disruption.
Newbury Town Council said it had been told by the district council’s tree officer that the works needed to be completed next year as the trees had reached a height which could pose a risk to public safety.
The six new benches will cost £602 each and the council said that it hoped to have them in place by the New Year.
The plans were revealed at a Newbury Town Council meeting on Monday.
Speaking to the Newbury Weekly News after the meeting, the council’s acting proper officer, Granville Taylor said: “The work is being done on the grounds of public safety and for the health of the trees.
“We have now inspected the trees and appointed a contractor and hope to start in February next year.”
