Video report: West Berkshire gym club wins £60,000
KD Gymnastics scooped the Jubilee People's Millions prize towards a new gymnastics centre
A WEST Berkshire gymnastics club has won £60,000 to turn a redundant Newbury building into a brand new gymnastics centre.
KD Gymnastics has been homeless for the past two weeks after having to move out of its former facility at Downe House School, Cold Ash, and not having the funding to refurbish its new building in Bone Lane, Newbury.
Yesterday (Tuesday), they were elated after being announced as the winners of the Jubilee People's Millions after getting the most votes and beating off competition from Cowes Sailability Club.
The gym club had more than 100 members and a waiting list at Downe House School and head coach, Tony Horne, said that they could be coaching future Olympic champions at the new facility.
On receiving the news of their success, Mr Horne said yesterday: "We are ecstatic, It's fantastic.
"It's a great achievement for what everybody in the club has done.
"We have always wanted a purpose built facility and we are going to build it into a fantastic gymnastics centre."
A new heating system, a disabled toilet, a kitchen and plumbing works need putting in and the walls need painting and decorating among other things at the new facility.
However, once the facility is up and running, it will be a one of a kind in Berkshire and will serve everyone from elite athletes to those with disabilities.
