Villagers mark rededication of Woolhampton war memorial
The memorial bears the names of 20 villagers who died in the two world wars - 15 from the First World War and five from the Second World War.
About 20 people attended the rededication service at St Peter’s Church on Saturday, where the Rev Becky Bevan held a service to remember those who gave their lives in service to their country.
The war memorial was initially cleaned in Autumn last year but bad weather meant that the work could not be completed until March this year.
All of the names of those who died were re-carved and filled where necessary.
The project cost more than £2,200, with half of the funding coming from the War Memorials Trust, the rest from Woolhampton parish council.
The chairman of Woolhampton parish council, Tony Renouf, said: “It’s important that the promise that they would achieve immortality is honoured.
“It’s taken a long time because of the weather at the end of last year and without the War Memorials Trust we wuld have been less likely to have finished it this year.”
Mr Renouf also said that the village had been fortunate to get it’s memorial re-dedicated in time for next year, which will mark the centenary of the start of the First World War.
