Visitors flock to Civil War themed day at Shaw House near Newbury




Shaw House opened its doors to the public on Saturday (March 8) for its 17th century themed day.

The all-day event transported visitors back 380 years to 1644, when the English Civil War was raging across the country.

It featured several displays and military demonstrations from 10.15am which saw pikemen and musketeers locked in combat on the lawns at the side of the historic house.

Music and living history displays from the era were also held inside and outside the house and included dancing.

A memorial service for the soldiers who perished in this conflict was observed around midday.

Re-enactors came from the Earl Rivers Regiment of Foot, part of The Sealed Knot, a registered charity.

The day ended with a mock siege and execution.

Both the First and Second Battles of Newbury commemorated their 380th anniversaries last year.
