Volunteer West Berkshire driver steps down after 18 years
Mr Chidley (pictured far right) has helped transport thousands of people during 18 years service with Volunteer Centre West Berkshire and has also served as a trustee.
The former scientist began as a Handybus driver aged 62 but charity regulations meant that he had to stop when he reached his 75th birthday.
Mr Chidley then became a trustee and also a volunteer car driver.
He continued until his 80th birthday this week and on Tuesday he completed his last shift.
Centre director Garry Poulson said: “We really will miss him very much. He is both a very clever man and a smashing fellow who had an absolute empathy with the people he drove around.
“He’s made a massive contribution to our charity over the years, both as a trustee and as a driver and has a wonderful kind manner.
“I’m pleased to say he’ll be on hand to help out in other capabilities in future.”
Mr Chidley said: “I’ve found the whole experience very
satisfying because the people I’ve carried are always grateful and I always come away feeling happy at the end of the day.”
In 2010 the Volunteer Centre West Berkshire has helped the district to be top in the country for volunteering.
A Government-commissioned independent survey showed West Berkshire to be the best at volunteering in England.
