Volunteers needed to help plant wildflower meadow at St George’s Avenue, in Newbury

A new wildflower meadow is being planted in Newbury.

And volunteers are now needed to roll up their sleeves and get a little dirty.

The new area will be planted at St George’s Avenue and the event is being organised by Newbury Town Council’s green spaces working group, in partnership with Newbury in Bloom and Friends of the Earth Newbury.

Town councillor Ian Jee, chair of the working group, said: “Our wildflower areas at Victoria Park, City Recreation Ground, and Roebutts Close have been a great success – bursting with colour all summer and providing a crucial habitat for pollinators.

“Now, we’re excited to create another. If you love nature, biodiversity, or simply want to make a difference in your community, we’d love to see you there.”

Wildflower meadows aren’t just beautiful – they’re essential for biodiversity and bring many benefits to the town.

They provide food and shelter for bees, butterflies, birds and small mammals and attract a diverse range of insects, spiders and millipedes.

“The ever-changing bursts of colour add natural beauty to the urban landscape throughout the seasons, enhancing the environment for everyone,” organisers added.

“By encouraging beneficial insects to the area, wildflowers play a vital role in pollination, helping crops grow and providing food for other wildlife.”

You don’t need any experience to get involved. The town council just asks that people “bring your enthusiasm and a willingness to get your hands a little dirty!”

The event is taking place on Saturday, March 29, at 10am.
