Volunteers renovate Thatcham play area

Refurb opens Moorside multi-use games area for the holidays

A CHILDREN’S play area in the town has received a much- needed facelift thanks to work from volunteers.

Thatcham Youth took on a project to renovate the multi-use games area at the Moorside Community Centre in Urquhart Road.

The group, which works on enhancing provision for young people in Thatcham, said that the area was looking tired and in need of attention.

They approached the owners and offered to undertake the work in return for permission to open the area for young people to use during the school Easter holiday.

Members of the local community, including Thatcham Neighbourhood Wardens and their Junior Wardens, joined Thatcham Youth volunteers and worked tirelessly throughout the day to transform the sporting asset.

As a result of the refurbishment, the area was opened by a Thatcham Youth volunteer throughout the school Easter holidays.

Agreement has subsequently been reached to open it every weekend, from 9.30am to 8.30pm, giving the young people of Thatcham a chance to make good use of this great community asset.

Thatcham Youth chairwoman, Mel Alexander, said: “We are so very grateful to Ashmore Services, Mik’s Paints and Bedec Paint Company for their generosity and for their support of Thatcham’s young people.

The project would not have been possible without them.

“I would also like to offer my heartfelt thanks to everyone who helped on the day.

“It was hard work but it was well worth it. The area now looks great and we know that young people made good use of it over the school holiday.

“This is what Thatcham Youth is all about, working in the local community to provide activities for the young people of our town.

“Thatcham is already a great place; we aim to make it even better.”
