Volunteers wanted for Help the Heroes fundraiser

Former Mayor wants you to do your bit

CAN you spare a few hours, or come up with an idea, to help make Hungerford's Help for Heroes fundraiser the best in the area?

If so, former town councillor Peter Harries would like to hear from you.

For two days - July 1 and July 2 - the charity, which provides direct, practical support for our wounded soldiers, will run a collection outside Tesco Hungerford.

This is part of a nationwide campaign but Mr Harries wants Hungerford's effort to be the best.

He said: “British servicemen and women write a blank cheque made payable to the UK for an amount ‘up to and including their life' and ask nothing in return except our friendship and understanding.

“It's our duty to look after them. I hope the people of Hungerford will help me expand this to the whole town.”

Mr Harries is being helped by town councillor Margaret Wilson and former councillor Rod Desmeules. Staff at Kaleidoscope and Hungerford Town Junior Football Club have also pledged support.

Mr Harries added: “Hopefully individuals and local children will get involved, too.

Volunteers are being sought not only for fundraising efforts but to help collect cash from shoppers in special containers.

Mr Harries, whose son and son-in-law has served in Iraq and Afghanistan, is a keen supporter of Help for Heroes.
