Waitrose apology after live worm found in fish packet

Newbury resident Carl Dixon said his partner made the grim discovery as she was preparing a meal for the pair last Tuesday (11).
“She called me horrified to find a live moving worm on the fish in the just-opened pack,” he said.
“On finding the worm we took the pack back to Waitrose, I spoke with the duty manager.
“Her response was that Waitrose did not own the product, they just sold it on behalf of the supplier.
“The complaint was logged and she told me that the pack would be passed back to the suppliers laboratory for analysis and a report would be forwarded to me in due course.
“It wasn’t very pleasant.”
The retailer offered Mr Dixon a refund, and another item of food from the store in its place.
A spokeswoman for Waitrose, Gill Smith, said: “This item was a small nematode worm, which are naturally occurring, but would normally be removed when fish are gutted and filleted.
“Although the worm is totally harmless, we appreciate that it would have been an unpleasant discovery and are very sorry for the shock that this would have caused.”
