Warnings of high levels of air pollution today (Weds)

Parts of the south east, including West Berkshire, were rated to have “high” levels of air pollution by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), sitting at seven on the scale, with 10 the highest possible.
Local emissions and pollution from Europe were said to be among the other causes.
Parts of East Anglia were graded as 10 this morning, while other parts of the south and Midlands were graded as eight or nine on the scale.
Guidance provided by the Met Office has said that asthma sufferers may notice an increased need to use inhaler medication.
It adds: “When levels of air pollution increase it would be sensible for those who have noticed that they are affected to limit their exposure to air pollutants.
“This does not mean staying indoors, but reducing levels of exercise outdoors would be reasonable.
“Older people and those with heart and lung conditions might avoid exertion on high pollution days.”
A spokesman for Defra said: “The high level of air pollution this week is due to a combination of local emissions, light winds, pollution from the continent and dust blown over from the Sahara.
“We want to keep improving air quality and have introduced a new five day forecast service in addition to investing heavily in local and transport initiatives to tackle this issue head on.”
Air pollution is expected to reduce to low and moderate levels in the south east tomorrow (Thursday), with most of the country expected to have low levels by Friday.
