Wartime re-enactors will bring touch of nostalgia to county show
A typical wartime allotment, period vehicles and a collection of horticultural and agricultural hand tools will take pride of place at the show, being held at the Newbury Showground on September 21 and 22, while visitors will also have the chance to turn their hand to typical wartime dances including the jive and jitterbug, demonstrated by Thatcham company Ginger Jive.
Patrolling the area will be policemen, air raid wardens and Red Cross nurses in period uniforms, being brought to the show by 1940s re-enactment group Home Front History, while characters such as war commander Field Marshal Montgomery and the Queen consort, the late Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, will be on hand to meet with show-goers. Further entertainment in the village, which will be located in the south west corner of the showground, will be provided by the Spitfire Sisters.
The wartime theme will continue throughout the show as local land girls, now in their 80s and 90s, will in turn take the salute from a trio or wartime bombers, the Spitfire, Hurricane and Lancaster, which will be performing over the showground courtesy of the RAF’s Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.
Show chairwoman Ali Brown said: “It promises to be a magical experience that is full of nostalgia.
“The fact that we have the bombers as one of our highlights gives us a great opportunity to bring the 1940s to life in a way that brings back memories for those who lived through those years and is respectful of all that they went through.”
