Wash Water gas barbecue fire prompts safety warning
According to Phil Knight, watch manager of White Watch at Newbury Fire Station, one pump from Newbury, and a second from Wokingham Road, Reading, were called at 4pm to a barbecue on fire in a garden at a house in Wash Water Road.
The fire was mostly extinguished when firefighters arrived,by the householders who used a garden hose on the blaze, after the barbecue - including a liquid petroleum gas cylinder, failed to work and caught alight.
No-one was hurt and firefighters left the scene after 20 minutes, after making both the barbecue and gas cylinder safe.
Mr Knight said before lighting barbecues, they should first be checked to make sure they were in good working order.
