Watch: Aldermaston Wharf Bridge lifted and removed for refurbishment
A section of Aldermaston Wharf Bridge has been lifted and removed for refurbishment.
The entire bascule part of the bridge was removed and lifted this afternoon (Friday).
Our photographer Phil Cannings was out to capture the moment construction workers lifted the bridge.
It will be moved to a steel fabrication yard for structural repairs and repainting.
The work has closed the A340 from January 8 until it is reinstalled and made operational again by March 15.
The bridge was constructed in the early 1980s and many of its structural, mechanical, electrical and hydraulic systems are now outdated, with spare parts becoming increasingly harder to source.
