WATCH: Astonishing video of meteor captured in Tot Hill near Newbury by Chris Woolley, 71, on December 30, 2023
An astonishing video of a blazing meteor falling through the night sky has been captured by a Tot Hill resident.
Chris Woolley, a 71-year-old retiree, found the startling video of the shooting star on one of the four Wyze Cam cameras he has installed in his garden when checking them on the morning of December 30.
The breathtaking video of the meteor flying down westwards from space was recorded at 2.07am.
Mr Woolley said: “I was surprised then to see the meteor explosion and burn out captured.
“My immediate thought was that Hungerford was a smoking crater.
“I looked on the internet that morning, and there was nothing reported, so I guessed that it was either a meteor or a returning piece of space junk.
“I have never seen one explode like that before. I have seen a few meteor showers and shooting stars before, but never as good.”
Although the cameras’ primary function is for security and to capture what wildlife are up to in his garden, they are activated by movement and light and so can sometimes capture celestial events.
Mr Woolley has posted his video onto local social media platform Nextdoor and it has been gaining some interest in the Newbury area.
