Watch: Town crier proclamation to Queen begins Platinum Jubilee celebrations in West Berkshire




The Platinum Jubilee celebrations are officially underway in West Berkshire with hundreds out in the sun commemorating the Queen's 70 year reign.

In both Newbury and Thatcham, the proclamation was made with the Newbury Town Crier ringing the bell, commencing celebrations.

The proclamation in Newbury was held in the Market Place with Thatcham's in the Broadway with the Mayor of Thatcham Jeff Brooks in attendance.

Newbury Town Crier Brian Sylvester said: "Today, throughout our nation and the Commonwealth, we our celebrating our glorious Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. Elizabeth, the second by that name, our most beloved sovereign, and Head of the Commonwealth for 70 years.

"How apt that this should be a Platinum anniversary in her accession, the most noble of metals more valuable than even gold."

He continued: "And so, it is with great honour on this occasion that beacons will be lit this evening throughout the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, Isle of Man and the UK overseas territories, and all of the capital cities of the Commonwealth.

"We are one nation, and one Commonwealth- God Save the Queen."

The beacons will be lit across the district tonight at around 9.30pm.
