Water levels stabilise at Burghfield substation but monitoring continues

Fire crews started clearing flood waters on Christmas Day afternoon at the Southern Electric substation near Pingewood Lake.
Firefighters were also working to prevent floodwater reaching a switchgear which provides electricity to about 40,000 homes and offices in Reading and South Oxfordshire.
The water levels are now stabilising but the Met Office is predicting further rainfall.
There are currently 31 flood warnings and 81 flood alerts in force across the South East.
Environment Agency flood and coastal risk manager, Peter Quarmby, said: “We are closely monitoring the situation across the South East as river levels continue to rise.
“We have staff working round the clock over the next few days to monitor the situation.
“We are working to minimise any possible risk of flooding and warning residents to take action now and reduce the risks and impacts.
“We are continuing to warn motorists not to drive through floodwater, it is very dangerous.
“We have had already seen more than 20mm of rain overnight and we’re expecting further intense rainfall in many areas later today, particularly across Oxfordshire, Berkshire, Surry, London and parts of Wiltshire.”
