'Wave' of vandalism at Newbury play areas could force them to close
Newbury playgrounds could be forced to close after a “wave” of vandalism and graffiti across the town.
Over the last week, Newbury Town Council said vandals have caused “considerable damage” to the play equipment at the play area in Digby Road, with two children’s slides vandalised and sprayed with graffiti.
The council said the slides are most likely beyond repair, and it was doubtful as to whether they could be replaced due to the cost of the equipment.
There has also been a “wave” of graffiti and damage throughout Newbury, including some of the town council’s play areas and in Victoria Park.
In the park – described by the council as the “jewel in their crown” – the paddle boat container, kiosk, skatepark, tennis courts and the gates have all been damaged or graffitied.
Council leader Martin Colston (Lib Dem, West Fields) said: “We are so disappointed to find that we have suffered this damage at several our recreation areas.
“We have reported these incidents to the police, and we will prosecute if the culprit is found.
“Last year we had a successful prosecution and the vandal has since paid for the damage they caused.
“These vandals are in effect stealing money from all of us as we have to pay to repair the damage and destruction they cause.
“This in turn can lead to the council not being able to afford other badly-needed services.”
He urged anyone with information about who may be causing the damage to report it to the police, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
