Thousands to attend remembrance services across the district to honour those killed serving their country
THOUSANDS of people from across West Berkshire and Hampshire will unite to honour all who have suffered or died in war, at Remembrance parades this Sunday, in the 102nd year after the outbreak of the First World War.
To allow the parades to take place, a number of road closures will be in force.
Below is all the information you need to know if you are planning to attend any of these events.
Newbury Parade
Newbury’s parade will form up at the Royal British Legion in Pelican Lane and set off at 10.30am.
Veterans and serving soldiers will march down Northbrook Street and into Market Place for the service of remembrance and two minutes silence at 11am.
Wreaths will then be laid at the town war memorial before a service in St Nicolas’ Church.
Thatcham Parade
The A4 will be closed between Park Lane and the Catholic church from 10.30am until noon and traffic will be diverted via Tull Way and Floral Way.
Local buses, including the Jet Black 1 service, will be diverted away from The Broadway and the A4 during the parade.
The closure has been put in place in order to cope with increasing numbers of spectators at the parade.
The parade will start from the Kingsland Centre car park, with a rolling road closure through The Broadway and High Street.
It will assemble for the Act of Remembrance at the war memorial on the A4 and then proceed to St Mary’s Church via the High Street and The Broadway.
The rolling road closures will each last for approximately 10 minutes and drivers are encouraged to use The Moors and Lower Way during these times.
Cold Ash Parade
The main route through Cold Ash will also be closed off for the village’s Remembrance parade, which will leave the Acland Memorial Hall at 10.35am and proceed along Hermitage Road to Cold Ash Hill.
The stretch of road through the village will be subject to a rolling closure between Sewell Close and Walters Close between 10.30am and 11.15am.
Cold Ash Hill between St Mark’s School and St Mark’s Church will be closed from 10.35am to 11.10am.
The Act of Remembrance will be held outside the church in front of the war memorial between 10.45am and 11am.
A church service will be held immediately after this, followed by refreshments.
Speen Parade
The annual Act of Remembrance at Speen War Memorial will be led by John Hughesdon at 9.30am. Speen Lane will be closed from the A4 to Kimbers Close from 9am until 11pm.
Hungerford Parade
The parade will form up in the area around the Corn Exchange at around 10.15am.
Space will be at a premium in the High Street, so organisers have asked visitors to park in the Church Street and Station Road car parks.
Those coming into town from the A4 end should note that access to Bridge Street will be closed from 10.30am.
Parking for blue badge holders only will be available in the John O’Gaunt pub car park, courtesy of licensee Mark Genders.
The march to the war memorial, led by the Hungerford Town Band, will start at 10.40am for the Service of Remembrance starting at 10.55am.
After the service, a small Act of Remembrance will take place at the Second World War Memorial, near the football ground.
Lambourn Parade
High Street, Parsonage Lane, Newbury Street and Oxford Street will be closed between 10.45am and 11.15am during Lambourn’s parade.
Mortimer Parade
Between 10.45am and 11.30am, The Street will be closed between its junctions with West End Road and Hammonds Heath, and Hammonds Heath between West End Road and Windmill Road.
Burghfield Parade
The parade will assemble from 9.30am at the Hatch, with wreath laying at 10.30am, followed by a service at Burghfield St Mary’s Church. A road closure will be in place from 9.30am-12.30pm at The Hatch, between its junctions with Reading Road and Theale Road.
Pangbourne Parade
There will be a rolling closure with no diversion on A329 Reading Road (southern section only), The Square, High Street, A340 Church Street, Pangbourne Hill, between 2.25pm and 2.50pm and on the return route between 3.50pm and 4pm.
Theale Parade
The service will form up at The Holy Trinity Church at 10am, which will be followed by two minute’s silence at 11am at the war memorial. Refreshments will be served afterwards at Theale C of E Primary School.
High Street and Church Street will be closed between 9.20am and 10.15am.
In North Hampshire, the following parades will be taking place:
Heath End, Baughurst: 10.30am – Assemble for Parade. 10.45am – Parade departs Heath End Village Hall. 11am – Service at War Memorial and laying Of wreaths.
St Paul’s Church, The Green, Tadley: 2.30pm – Assemble at Tadley School. 2.50pm – Parade departs Tadley School. 3pm – Service at St Paul’s Church followed by laying of wreaths at the war memorial.
Kingsclere: 10.40am parade from Swan Street to St Mary’s Church. Act of remembrance at the war memorial outside the church followed by service.
Headley: 3pm St Peter’s Church service of remembrance.
Ashford Hill: 10.45am St Paul’s Church service of remembrance.
Highclere: 10.55am service at St Michael and All Angels church followed by laying of wreaths and poppies outside the church.
East End war memorial: 10.55am service
Woolton Hill: 3.30pm service at St Thomas’ Church.
Burghclere: 10.50am act of remembrance at the war memorial, followed by service inside the Church of the Ascension.
Silchester: 10.55am service at the village war memorial.
