After Storm Babet and Storm Ciarán strike the UK – what could the other storms in the 2023/24 season be called?
With Storm Ciarán having brought heavy rain and wind to the South of England a thought may have entered people’s heads – what could the future storms be called?
The first storm of the season, Storm Agnes hit the Isles of Scilly, North Wales and the Irish coast on September 27 and 28, while the action was brought again with Storm Babet towards the end of October.
Storm Ciarán has now dissipated, but it’s unlikely to be the last to hit British shores.
On September 1, the Met Office revealed the full list of names for the 2023/24 season, with some weather responders making the list.
Should more reach the country, the next storm would be called Storm Debi.
Following this would be Elin, Fergus, Gerrit, Henk, Isha, Jocelyn, Kathleen, Lilian, Minnie, Nicholas, Olga, Piet, Regina, Stuart, Tamiko, Vincent and Walid.
Q, U, X, Y and Z were excluded in line with US National Hurricane Centre naming conventions.
These names included suggestions from the public.
The Met Office’s head of situational awareness, Will Lang, said this was the ninth year the authority has named storms.
He stated naming them helped to ease communication of severe weather and provides clarity when people could be impacted by the weather.
Mr Lang added: “This year, it’s great to be able to recognise the collaborative efforts of some of our partners across the UK with the inclusion of names from some partner organisations.
“Working across different agencies allows us to help as many people as possible be prepared for severe weather.”
