The Met Office said there is a risk of localised flooding as up to 40mm of rain could fall in just two hours in some areas.

“Outbreaks of rain, heavy at times with a risk of thunder, are expected to develop later on Monday afternoon then move northwards through the evening and overnight,” it added.

It also warned of disruption to public transport, difficult driving conditions on the roads and the chance of power cuts in some areas.
