Gagandeep Kakkad, aged 23, of Nursery Gardens, Purley, was handed the sentence when he appeared at Reading Crown Court on Monday (19).
Mr Kakkad was also ordered to do an extended retest and fined £1,200.
He admitted to the offence after he struck and killed a 43-year-old man in Wokingham Road, Reading, on September 22, 2012.
Pc Melanie Todd said: “This is another example of how important it is to always pay full attention on the road particularly when vehicles interact with vulnerable road users particularly pedestrians.”
