West Berks schools to take part in Farmhouse Breakfast Week
Part of a national campaign, these popular workshops are run by the Newbury & District Agricultural Society (NDAS) in schools across the county.
Education Officer at NDAS, Jan Murray, said: "This is our fifth year running these events, and demand has been so strong that we have had to extend the week-long initiative to three to accommodate all the schools.
“West Berkshire primary schools will be taking part from Lambourn to Yattendon this time.”
Farmhouse Breakfast Week is an annual campaign promoted by HGCA, the cereals and oilseeds division of the Agriculture and Horticulture Board, which aims to get the nation to “Shake up their Wake Up!”
47 per cent of people regularly skip breakfast during the week and this initiative aims to teach young people about the many healthy, British-grown options available for breakfast and where the food they eat comes from.
Youngsters – from ages 4 to eleven – will enjoy demonstrations of how to make smoothies and porridge – as well as tastings – followed by some lively breakfast-themed games.
"They are given a talk about how and where the food they have eaten is produced, with Buttercup, the wooden cow on hand to help.
The workshop concludes with the children planting cereal crops – wheat, oats and barley, which they can either grow on at school or take home to nurture.
Beedon Primary School teacher, Sonia Green, said: "Our pupils have learned a great deal from these workshops and they really enjoy them.
"Eating a nutritious breakfast is extremely important for youngsters as it sets them up for the day and improves their concentration and performance.
"The Farmhouse Breakfast workshops are a most effective way to teach them about the food they eat while having fun.”
The education team at the NDAS will be very busy, with workshops taking place every weekday from Monday (20) to February 7.
Participating schools from West Berkshire are Thatcham Park Primary, The Winchcombe School, Mary Hare, Chieveley Primary, Lambourn Primary, Beedon Primary, Cold Ash St Marks Primary, and Yattendon Primary.
