West Berkshire collects hundreds of tubs in Greene King scheme for Macmillan Cancer Support
West Berkshire residents have donated hundreds of plastic tubs to Greene King to recycle into money in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.
Over 600 tubs have been collected throughout the district for the Tub2Pub scheme — more than double last year’s figure.
And this is the fifth year that green business Thatcham Refillable has supported the campaign.
Of the 618 tubs, there were six cracker tubs, 38 sweet tubs, 209 Hero’s tubs, 168 Quality Street tubs and 197 Celebrations tubs.
The tubs were presented for the second time to The Berkshire Arms, in Midgham.
Another 70 collected in Kintbury were delivered to the The Bear pub, in Hungerford.
Thatcham entrepreneur Jenny Kirby, co-founder of Thatcham Refillable, has been storing the tubs.
She said: “We just put the post out and ask people to save it. We share it as wide as we can.”
And the most challenging part?
“Storing (the tubs) in the dining room,” she added. “Because of all the grooves, they get wet, so you can't keep them outside.
“And there's not one single sweet that's been left in the five years of doing it.
“The people who were doing it one year have continued the next year and the next.”
The tubs will be shredded and granulated for sale to manufacturers, in place of virgin plastic.
Each tub equates to approximately eight pence — roughly £50 in total.
The Tub2Pub initiative collected more than 150,000 tubs last year, raising £12,600 for Macmillan Cancer.
