Greene King tub2pub : West Berkshire collects hundreds of tubs for Macmillan Cancer

Throughout January, Greene King pubs have been taking in plastic tubs for its Tub2Pub scheme, to recycle into money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

This is the fourth year that local organisation Thatcham Refillable is supporting the campaign.

The tubs are traditionally taken to The Bear pub in Hungerford and then sent to DCW Polymers' plastic reprocessing centre in Exeter.

This year they were held at The Berkshire Arms.

In West Berkshire, 273 were collected, almost half as many as last years 429 tubs.

Thatcham woman Jenny Kirby, who has been storing the tubs, has broken down the numbers of different brands of tubs received.

Of the 273 tubs, there were 78 Quality Street tubs, 79 Heroes, 69 Celebrations, 43 Roses, three mixed sweets and one cracker tub.

The tubs will be shredded and granulated for sale to manufacturers, in place of virgin plastic.

Each tub equates to approximately eight pence.

Mrs Kirby, from Thatcham Refillable, said: “Thatcham Refillable likes helping with this collection every year as it's easy, not messy and not smelly.

“Most people either have a tub of sweets or give a tub at Christmas.

“It's a fun way to get people thinking about single use plastic and what can be recycled.

“Macmillan is such a great cause; I am sure everyone knows someone affected by cancer.”
