West Berkshire Council refuses new skate ramp application at Aldermaston

Red tape has got in the way of a new skate ramp in Aldermaston.

Aldermaston Parish Council had submitted an application to West Berkshire Council looking for a certificate of lawfulness to build and operate the skate ramp and a path leading up to it.

But the district authority said no – because it doesn’t fall within permitted development rights.

The parish council wanted to put the skate ramp up on the playing field in Station Road because there was one there previously – but in a different location.

The previous ramp was a wooden frame above the ground, but was removed in 2021 after falling into a bad state of repair.

After lengthy discussions between parish councillors and local residents, it was decided that maintaining and repairing the ramp would be too costly, and the community looked towards building a new one.

The planned redevelopment, headed by Aldermaston businessman, Adam Reed, sought to raise £59,500 for the project and had secured backing from a number of local businesses, including Rosebourne Farm Shop, AWE Aldermaston and Veolia Waste Management at Padworth.

The proposed new ramp would have been smaller than those at Thatcham, Newbury and the planned major redevelopment at Tadley, to keep in line with the village's aesthetic and to avoid drawing too many crowds.
