West Berkshire Museum refurb and plans for Newbury hotel up for discussion





Items on tonight’s agenda include West Berkshire Council’s proposals for the restoration of the museum in Wharf Street and plans for a new 24-suite apart-hotel in West Street, Newbury.
The district council’s plans for the refurbishment of West Berkshire Museum involves the restoration of the historic Cloth Hall and Corn Stores, creation of a new link building and visitor facilities, and complete refurbishment of all display and activity spaces.
The district council has allocated £815,500 in its capital programme as towards the total costs of £2.26 million.
A further £200,500 has to be raised from other sources; the Headley Trust has already committed £40,000 towards the project.
Reading-based Woolf Bond Planning on behalf of Reading-based House Of Fisher, has submitted plans for a new 24-room, four storey apart-hotel at Elizabeth House in West Street.
Apart-hotels contain furnished apartments which are available for short-term flexible stays which are fully furnished and specifically designed for short term business or leisure stays.
If approved, the new apart-hotel will containing a mix of approximately one third one bedroom style suites and two thirds studio style suites.
On the ground floor there will be staff offices, storage space, staff facilities, the entrance foyer, and a private gymnasium.
Members of the town council will tonight (Mon) decide whether to raise objections or no objections to the plans before they get referred to West Berkshire Council.
The meeting takes place from 7.30pm at the Council Chamber, Town Hall, Market Place.
