West Berkshire residents recognised in Queen's Birthday Honours
The headteacher of the Avenue Special Needs Academy in Tilehurst, Susan Bourne, from Newbury, has been made a Dame for her services to education, working with pupils who have severe and complex autism.
The school has gone from strength-to-strength under her leadership, having received an outstanding Ofsted report in 2011, despite being marked for closure 10 years ago.
There was a knighthood for Charlie Mayfield, who lives close to Newbury, for his services to business in his role as the chair of the John Lewis Partnership and the chairman of the UK Commission for Employment and Skills.
Elsewhere, Professor Christine Williams, from Thatcham, who is the pro-vice-chancellor for research and Hugh Sinclair Professor of Human Nutrition at the University of Reading, was appointed an OBE for her services to education and nutrition science.
Also appointed an OBE was operations director at Thames Water, Robert Collington, for his services to London and the Thames Valley during last year's drought.
