West Berkshire slides down the table for life expectancy

The figures from the Office for National Statistics shows that life expectancy between 2011-13 in the local authority was 80.7 years for men, ranked 91st, and 84.2 years for women, ranked 99th.
This is behind 80.8 (ranked 67th) for men, and 88.6 (ranked 44th) for women between 2010 and 2012.
The figures are based on three-year rolling averages taking into account deaths registered in calendar years and mid-year population estimates.
For women aged over 65 there was also a significant drop in the rankings. Life expectancy beyond 65 was 22 years, ranked 73rd, which is a drop of 43 places from the previous year’s figures.
For men, the latest statistics remained largely static and saw a drop of a single place to 82nd position with an expectancy to live 19.4 years.
The top ranked local authority for men across England and Wales is jointly placed South Cambridgeshire and Hart who both have a life expectancy of 83 years. Nearby Chiltern is top placed for women with an age of 86.4 years.
At the bottom of the table which ranks 346 local authorities is Blackpool at 74.3 years for men and Manchester for women who can expect 80 years.
National life expectancy is 79.4 for men and 80.1 for women in England and in the south east the average is 80.4 for men and 83.9 for women.
West Berkshire Council spokesperson Keith Ulyatt said: "Selecting a single year is a distortion of the statistics presented.
“The figures are for a 13-year period and they fluctuate considerably year on year, with no particular upward or downward trend. The level in West Berkshire for men is the same as it was in 2005, for women better than it was in 2007-8, and for over 65s better than it was for men in 2011 and for women in 2009 and a couple of years before that.”
