West Berkshire has woken from the storm and been faced with traffic disruption, flooding and damage.

An estimated 74mm of rain fell in the district last night, turning roads and rails to rivers and causing some properties to flood.

Power went out across Newbury and a power cut combined with a flooded car park led the retail park to be closed temporarily.

Newbury firefighters were called to 14 storm related incidents around Newbury overnight and were still out this morning.

Racing at Newbury is going ahead despite last night's heavy rain making the ground heavy and a reported 44 non runners across the card.

The Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service is urging residents to take extra care during the severe weather and has issued the following advice:

Do not drive through flood water – drivers are still taking enormous risks, with several vehicles having become completely submerged – drivers are endangering their lives.

Manholes may be dangerous – during the flooding it is difficult to see what is underneath the water but the rain can add pressure underneath the man holes.

Ensure good ventilation if using portable indoor heating appliances to dry out indoor spaces – do not use petrol or diesel generators or other similar fuel-driven equipment indoors: the exhaust gases contain carbon monoxide which can kill.

Do not turn on gas or electrics if they have got wet – only turn them on when they have been checked by a qualified technician.

Do not move or ignore road closures signs – they are there for your safety, so please do not ignore them.
