West Berkshire's answer to Billy Elliot lives the dream
Dominic Rocca of Hampstead Norreys won a half scholarship with the National Youth Ballet after he was spotted while performing a demonstration class at The Royal Ballet.
The 16-year-old, a pupil at West Berkshire Ballet School, performed at the National Youth Ballet’s silver jubilee summer shows, with the final performance at the world renowned Sadler's Wells in London last Sunday.
The Downs School, Compton, pupil, who got straight As and A*s in his GCSEs this summer, now intends to stay at the school’s sixth form to study biology, chemistry, history and psychology at A-level, but still has a burning ambition to become a professional ballet dancer.
Principal at West Berkshire Ballet School, which is run from the Memorial Hall, Upper Bucklebury, Jane Scholl said: “We’re really proud of Dominic.
“It is really quite an achievement to be selected by the National Youth Ballet.
“He didn’t even audition, he was dancing in a demonstration class at the Royal Ballet and one of the choreographers came up to me and said ‘Is that your pupil? Can we have him?”
It has been a momentous summer for West Berkshire Ballet School after one of the teachers, Holly Unnuk, performed at the closing ceremony of the Olympic Games last month.
