What a load of rubbish!
Flytipping continues as mattresses and trolleys are dumped across West Berkshire
WEST Berkshire Council has come under fire for not clearing up flytipped rubbish strewn across footpaths and roads in both urban and rural parts of the district this week.
Several items of litter, including fast food and takeaway packaging, cans, plastic, a blanket and several trolleys filled with waste, were spotted along the footpath running parallel to the A339 from Newbury Retail Park, while mattresses were found dumped by the side of the road near Upper Basildon on Monday.
One local resident, Marilyn Reynolds said she had never seen so much "disgusting rubbish" on the footpath by the A339 and that the smell reflected the content.
"I shall not be using this walkway again. It is a disgrace to Newbury and the human race, apart from being a serious Health and Safety issue," she said, adding: "What, I wonder, do we pay council tax for?"
Meanwhile, several mattresses were spotted by the side of the road along Yattendon Road between Bradfield and Upper Basildon.
West Berkshire Council spokeswoman Peta Stoddart-Crompton said the mattresses had now been removed, but added that the flytipped rubbish down the embankment on the A339 would not be cleared until later this month because a lane closure would be required on the dual carriageway in order to remove the items.
Meanwhile two transit van loads worth of corrugated asbestos sheeting was found dumped in Battery End, Wash Common and in Heather Gardens, off Monks Lane earlier this week.
