Appeal for information on lost historic well at Farnborough

Interest currently surrounds the fate of a historic village well in West Berkshire.

David Nash Ford, of Royal Berkshire History, recently shared photos online of a well in Farnborough, taken by Oxford photographer, Edward Leach, who originally published these as postcards.

But the well no longer exists and it is unclear when and why it was removed.

The village of Farnborough — not to be mistaken for Farnborough in Hampshire, London or Warwickshire — rests on the Berkshire Downs between Newbury and Wantage.

Its well formerly stood next to the Grade-II listed Old School House in Copperage Road.

But while the house still remains, the well has since vanished from the landscape.

"I know very little about the well itself," said Mr Ford. "It appears on old maps from 1898 and 1910. I think my photos are a bit later."

Mr Ford invites anyone with any information about the well to contact him via his website: https://www.berkshirehistory.com/. The site also has a Facebook page.
