What new Market Street 'gateway' will look like from train station

The first view rail passengers will get of Newbury after apartments are built

This is what the Market Street 'urban village' will look like from Newbury railway station.

Developer Grainger has released this new picture of the six-storey, 232-home development which was given the go-ahead by West Berkshire Council last week.

The town’s southern gateway will be dramatically altered with a series of multi-storey apartment blocks erected between Newbury railway station and Market Street.

The scheme will bring a total of 8,780 sq ft of new commercial space to Newbury, along with a new 400-space multi-storey car park for station users and council employees (and open to the public at weekends).

The existing bus station in Market Street will be demolished and a new interchange built at The Wharf.

The scheme will provide a mix of apartments, duplexes and houses, 219 of which will be available for private rent, while the 13 affordable units will be for shared ownership.

The development, which will range from 2.5 to six storeys high, will be managed by Grainger which will retain ownership of the homes for the long-term.

Grainger says work on the site is expected to begin in winter 2017, with the first new homes likely to be completed in spring 2019.
