What's on in West Berkshire and North Hampshire: Christmas markets, Winter Wonderland and dog costume competition




The festive season is upon us and that means lights, markets and winter wonderlands. There will be plenty to do this weekend in West Berkshire and North Hampshire.

Friday 25

Winter Wonderland, St Mary's, Bishopswood Road, Tadley 3.30pm - 9pm. The event is free. It will be open throughout the weekend, on Saturday from 10am- 8pm and Sunday noon - 5pm.

Inkpen Christmas Market, 6pm.

Carers Rights Day, Frank Hutchins Hall, Thatcham, 12.30pm - 3.30pm. West Berkshire Council's adult social care team and a number of local organisations will be offering advice to carers at this free event. There will also be talks on wills, deputyships, trusts and power of attorney by Irwin Mitchell Solicitors.

Light Switch On, Ambrose Allen Centre on Franklin Avenue, Tadley 6pm, lights on at 7pm. Two pantomime stars will be turning on Tadley’s Christmas lights, Cinderella, played by Rachel Grundy, and Prince Charming, played by Joseph Hewlett, who both star in The Anvil’s Christmas production of the classic fairy tale.

Christmas shopping, Brimpton Primary School, 7pm-9pm. Visitors can browse a variety of bespoke gifts including jewellery, candles, ceramics and home-made crafts. Refreshments will be provided, and free parking is available on the school playground. No tickets required.

Legacy Dance event, Kennet School, Thatcham, 7.30pm- 11.30pm. To all lovers of dance, there will be ballroom and Latin dancing held at Kennet School, raising money for Newbury Cancer Care. There will be no bar, bring your own nibbles. Entry is £6.50. For more information contact 07786256909 or 01635 965896.

Saturday 26

Woolton Hill Village Christmas Market, 10.30am- 1pm. There will be stalls across three areas, the village hall car park for fish, meat and plants, St Thomas’ School playground which will include a brunch bar and St Thomas’ School hall for wine, cosmetics and chocolate.

Authors meet at Newbury Library, 11am - 3pm. More than 30 writers, from West Berkshire will be present to tell visitors all about their recently published works and sell some copies.

Winter Wonderland, The Falcon Pub, Theale from noon- 4pm. There will be a Santa's Grotto, refreshments including mulled wine, mince pies, hot toasted chestnuts and more. Entry is free and any proceeds raised will go towards Breast Cancer Now.

Christmas Bazaar, St. Mary’s Church, Speen, noon - 3pm. There will be stalls including a tombola, children’s postbox to Santa, Christmas wreaths, toys, refreshments and much more. Admission is free, and parking is available.

Nature Discovery Centre public event, Thatcham- The centre reopened on November 23 and it will be holding an event on Saturday to show off its new bird 'Hide in the Sky' as well as other refurbishments.

Sunday 27

Winter Wonderland, The Castle Pub Cold Ash, noon- 5pm. Pop down for up fresh jacket potatoes, home-baked cakes, mulled wine and mince pies as well as a Christmas Market and Santa's Grotto. This event will raise money for Newbury Cancer Care.

Tea Dance, Royal British Legion, Pelican Lane, Newbury, 1.30pm - 4pm. To all lovers of dance, there will be a ballroom sequence and Latin dance. Entry is £3. For more details call 01635 47415 or 865896.

Dog costume competition, The Castle Pub, Cold Ash, 3pm. Have a pooch you want to show off? There will be prizes for the best dressed dog, the most creative costume and the owner and pooch in a matching costume.

Hungerford Light Switch on, 4pm, lights on 5pm. Don't miss Hungerford's celebrated Christmas lights ceremony. The fun starts at 5pm. Music will be provided by the Hungerford Town Band and Hungerford Primary School.

Wednesday 30

Thames Valley Police ‘Have Your Say’, Shaw-cum-Donnington Village Hall, Love lane, 6.30pm. Come along to share your concerns with Thames Valley Police on Wednesday.
