What's on in West Berkshire today (Sat)

THERE are plenty of events to keep the whole family entertained in West Berkshire today (Saturday).
A pamper day in aid of Help for Heroes is being held at Diverse Beauty on Saturday as it celebrates its third birthday.
Staff at the salon will be offering visitors free hand and foot skin softening treatments from 10am to 4pm, while bubbly, beer and birthday cake will be aplenty.
Owner, Wash Common resident Vicky Lee, said she has been overwhelmed by the response of her customers since she opened the London Road salon.
“Our customers are amazing,” she said. “To have such supportive and dedicated customers after just three years in business is amazing, and our third birthday seemed the perfect opportunity to give something back to them to say thank you for all their support.”
Guests will also be in with the chance to get their hands on a number of prizes including free treatments and tickets to the Royal Military school of Music concert in Twickenham in a raffle on the day.
A bouncy castle, face painting and a display of modified cars will be available at a family fun day on Saturday (May 24), organised in support of Iona’s Fund.
Modified car and motorcycle group the West Berkshire Cruisers is hosting the event at The Starting Gate pub, Speen, from 2pm to 5pm to support a campaign to raise £10,000 for a specialist power wheelchair for eight-year-old schoolgirl Iona Hind, who has cerebral palsy.
A raffle and other attractions will also be on offer.
This will be one of the last events to raise funds for the cause, after the fundraising target was secured when children’s’ disability charity Spring Charity Fundraisers agreed to provide any additional funds required after the event.
Another fun day will be held to raise money for nine-year-old Jake Spencer, who needs £100,000 for a life-altering operation in the US to cure his rare form of epilepsy.
The youngster, who is currently receiving treatment at a children's hospital in Madrid, is expected to fly to Newbury to attend.
Jake, who turns ten this year, was first diagnosed with the condition when he was two years old.
However it was two years ago -just before his seventh birthday - when his condition started to rapidly deteriorate, with the youngster experiencing up to 200 seizures a day.
He has since had four seven hour operations to remove the affected area and on three occasions has been put into an induced coma to enable his brain to rest.
Jake was also forced to go through rigorous daily physiotherapy for three months and learned to walk again four times.
On the day there will be a raffle including prizes such as an iPhone, iPad, Samsung Galaxy, a night at the Four Season’s hotel and an England shirt signed by David Beckham.
Other events include a bouncy castle and kiddies play area plus lots of stalls including face & nail painting, tombola, cake stand, coconut shy, penalty shootout and Candy floss.
This will be followed by a disco at 7pm.
The residents of Burghfield will be treated as the Burghfield Common Scarecrow Trial, with the popular community event returning for a third year.
Visitors can get involved either as a scarecrow maker or by coming along and following the trail.
In a Scarecrow Trail, members of the public and local businesses make scarecrows and display them during the week of the trail.
The organizers provide a label or notice showing your scarecrow’s name and a clue which you display next to your scarecrow.
During the week of the Trail the organisers sell “trail sheets” with a map showing where all the scarecrows are and details of a puzzle or riddle which can only be solved using the clues on the labels displayed next to or on the scarecrows.
These trail sheets are returned with the answer and a vote for the scarecrow they liked best to the organizers.
The organisers then count up votes for the best scarecrow and put the trail sheet into a draw for a cash prize.
The theme for 2014 is “My favorite Film Character” and the prizes are as follows:
For the Best Scarecrows -£100 first prize, £50 second prize, £25 third prize.
Also on today is a pop up 'pick your own' Five A Day Market Garden in Englefield.
The community supported project aims to engage the rural and urban community by selling affordable, healthy, naturally grown produce, educating children, adults and older people within an outdoor therapeutic environment, with a focus on art, nature and fruit and vegetable production and encouraging people to get involved through volunteering.
There will also be cricket action as Hungerford take on Compton at the War Memorial Ground.
