Fun runs, flower shows and a visit from Paddington Bear

THERE is a lot going on in West Berkshire and beyond today (Saturday).

Silchester’s village fun run is setting off at 11am, and will include a fun zone for the first time.

There will be a five-mile run and a 2.5 mile run for mixed ability runners, families and walkers, with a warm-up at 10am with fitness instructor, Emma Perkins.

Supporters can enjoy a fun zone on the pavilion green, with entertainment, bouncy castles, sporting games, competitions, art and crafts, tea and cake tent and a barbecue, or they can relax with refreshments in the pavilion bar.

The East Woodhay flower show gets underway at 9am, including a plant and car boot sale.

Held at East Woodhay village hall – sellers’ entry, costing £5, is from 9am and buyers’ entry, at 50p, is from 10am. Refreshments will be available.

A coffee morning to raise funds for aid following the earthquake in Nepal is being held in Newbury Town Hall from 10.30am to 1.30pm.

The West Berkshire Indian Society is hosting the event and all funds will be donated to the International Association for Human Values (IAHV).

The organisation has sent volunteers to Nepal to help distribute relief materials, provide medical relief and conduct trauma relief workshops.

The one and only Paddington Bear will be in Parkway at 1.15pm, and to mark the event Lakeland will be offering a workshop to make the bear’s very favourite sweet treat, marmalade.

There will also be face-painting and other activities.

Cream teas will be dished up at a Kingsclere fundraiser from 2pm to 4pm to boost air ambulance funds.

“People can sit and enjoy being waited on with a cream tea for only £2 each and free squash and biscuits for the children,” said organiser Marie Gundry.

Cakes will also be for sale, with a guess-the-weight of the cake competition, and there will be various other stalls selling items, such as hand-knitted toys.

The event takes place at the George Street club.

And at 6.45pm Kintbury village cinema is showing Paddington (PG).

The adventures of the little bear from darkest Peru, adapted from Michael Bond’s beloved books, will be screened in the Coronation Hall.

Tickets cost £5 each on sale at the door and admission is free for children aged under 16 years.

The bar opens at 6.45pm; curtain up is at 7.30pm and the film ends at 9pm.
