THERE are plenty of events to keep the whole family entertained in West Berkshire today (Sat).

The £350,000 Al Shaqab Lockinge Stakes at Newbury Racecourse has attracted a record field of 18, beating the previous best of 15 in 2004.

The seven-race card boats a record £750,000 in prize money, the richest day's racing in Newbury's 110-year history.

Gates open at 11.30am with the first race at 1.30pm and last race at 5pm. Tickets are priced from £19.80 - £42.

For animal lovers, the Cats Protection Open Day will take place at Curridge Road, Thatcham, from 1pm to 4.30pm. Entry is 50p for adults for 20p for children. It is a family fun day with a free park and ride available.

Pooches will be putting their best paws forward to boost charity funds at a dog show organised by students as part of a May open day at Newbury College this morning.

For the second year in a row, animal care students at Newbury College are organising a charity dog show and dog owners are invited to enter their dogs, with all proceeds going to the National Dogs Trust and RSPCA.

The competition includes six categories: most obedient, best groomed, most accurate on an obstacle course, cutest big dog, cutest little dog, and waggiest tail, with rosettes for the winners.

The open day, from 10am to 1pm, will include information about courses at the college, in Monks Lane, alongside activities including an arts and crafts exhibition, facial and massage demonstrations.

Those with an eye for a bragain can visit Pandora's Antique Fair at Thatcham Catholic Hall, Bath Road from 9am to 4pm.

Viennesse music will fill the air at a Silchester church concert this evening.

Singing/acting group Five Voices will present A Viennese Soiree, accompanied by pianist Michael Evans, starting at 7.30pm at St Mary's church.
