What's on in West Berkshire today (Sat)
VJ Day commemorations and Ladies Day at Newbury Racecourse among the events
FASHIONISTAS will flock to Newbury Racecourse today as Ladies Day returns once again.
Those attending will have the chance to enter the Most Stylish Racegoer competition, with the winner receiving a holiday to Florida for two, worth up to £4,500, courtesy of Charter Travel of Newbury.
The family-owned and operated independent travel agency will also have a stand at the event and is encouraging racegoers to chat with its staff and take part in a prize draw for a bottle of Champagne every hour.
Betfred Ladies Day 2015 will be run for the first time in support of Breast Cancer Care and will feature a performance from ABBA tribute band Bjorn Again live after the racing.
You can pre-register for the Most Stylish competition and enter a separate draw to win an Elemis gift set by downloading and completing a form and emailing it to moststylish@newbury racecourse.co.uk
Other entertainment will include a cocktail mixologist and a professional photo experience, as well as the Refresh & Revive Pamper Zone, in association with Parkway Shopping Centre.
The day will feature seven races including the Betfair Group 2 Hungerford Stakes.
Meanwhile, Newbury will hold a special service at the War Memorial by St Nicholas Church tomorrow (Sat) to commemorate the 70th anniversary of VJ Day.
The town will say a thank you to the members of the Armed Services who were engaged in the war in the Far East, particularly those in Burma and in the Pacific Islands which became the forgotten conflict once the war in Europe ended in June 1945.
When the war in Europe ended, it continued in the Far East. The Japanese surrendered on August 14 1945 following the dropping of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki and Soviet declaration of war and invasion of Manchuria.
The next day, Wednesday August 15 1945 was celebrated as VJ (Victory over Japan) Day.
Newbury will be holding a brief service at the War Memorial, Bartholomew Street, to mark the 70th Anniversary of VJ Day commencing at 10.45am including a silence at 11am.
The members of the Burma Star association will take pride of place being represented at the service by 93-year-old Frank Hancock, who was in the Royal Air Force in Burma.
Mr Hancock will lay the Burma Star Association Wreath and recite the Kohima Prayer.
Also present will be many relatives of the service men who served in the conflict including David Glover - whose father was chairman of Newbury Branch of the Burma Star Association. He will say a few words about the association and its work.
Newbury Mayor Howard Bairstow will also lay a wreath on behalf of the townspeople alongside the chairman of West Berkshire Council, Peter Argyle.
The Royal British Legion will also lay wreathes in memory of the people of West Berkshire who were engaged in the Far East conflicts - especially the ones who did not return.
Everyone is invited to attend and remember the brave service personnel who were subjected to some of the worst treatment of any servicemen during the whole of the Second World War.
Across the border in Hampshire, East Woodhay will be hosting its annual flower show at the village hall from 2pm.
There will be a selection of fruit, flowers and vegetables on display and tea and refreshments on offer.
Adult tickets are priced at 50p, while children go free. All funds raised will go back into the village hall.
The Woodlands St Mary Flower Show also takes place on Saturday at the village hall between 2pm and 5pm.
There will also be stalls, refreshments and a bar.
Elsewhere, Newbury-based hairdressers LkHair are having a charity fun day from 3pm-6pm, as part of its ongoing efforts to raise funds for MIND.
If sport is more your thing, head on down to Barlows Park, where Tadley Calleva will host Guildford City in the FA Cup preliminary round.
