Wassailing, orienteering and life-saving – loads on today across the district.

At Thatcham’s Nature Discovery Centre between 2pm and 3pm wassailing comes to Thatcham.

The term wassail comes from the old norse ‘yes heil’ meaning ‘be you healthy.’

A ceremony involving singing and drinking the health of the trees would be performed for the occasion.

Today the Berkshire, Buckingham and Oxfordshire Wildlife Trust are inviting residents to come along and bring their own musical istruments to make a noise.

Snelsmore Common is the host of a range of orienteering events suitable from complete beginners to experienced orienteers.

Entrance is at grid ref SU463710 with parking at Snelsmore Common car park, and registration starts at 10am, priced £4 for BOF members and £5 for non-members.

A two-hour first aid course for baby and children will be held today at St John’s Church, St John’s Road, Newbury.

Newbury District Ornithological Club will hold a full-day visit to Steart Marshes, a new reserve on the Bristol Channel near Bridgwater, Somerset, created for flood alleviation.

The visit leaves Newbury at 8.30am looking for wintering wildfowl and waders. Contact 01488 668482 for further details.

Aldworth will also hold its village market from 9.30am until noon.
