One hundred years of the largest voluntary women’s organisation in the country will be celebrated this afternoon, not just in the district but around the country, as representatives from three local Women’s Institutes get together to do their part for the national baton relay to mark the occasion.
The local WI’s will start their journey on a vintage fire engine at Kingsclere at 9.30am before collecting the baton at Micheldever and continuing on to Highclere Castle for around 11.30.
The relay will then move on to Burghclere and Lady Carnarvon is expected to attend the birthday bash and to meet the WI leaders.
For a musical evening, Winchester College quiristers will be performing in concert at St James’ Church, Ashmansworth, tonight between 7pm and 8pm.
MP for North West Hampshire Sir George Young (CON) and the Earl and Countess of Carnarvon are some of the guests expected to attend the performance at the pre-12th century church.
The concert will include music by the composer Gerald Finzi who lived in the village from 1939, and his surviving son Kiffer with wife Hilary are also likely to attend.
In Mens Football this afternoon, Thatcham take on Thame and in Rugby Newbury Blues will host Towcestrians, both matches to kick off at 3pm.
