A touch of Madness pulls up at Newbury Racecourse

WITH many thousands heading for the Royal County of Berkshire Show today (Saturday) and first class horse racing at Newbury Racecourse - topped by a performance by Madness later - there remains plenty else to do in Newbury and beyond.

Allow plenty of time for journeys locally, with over 60,000 people anticipated to arrive at Newbury showground, at Hermitage, off the Chieveley junction of the M4/A34 interchange, for the opening day of the two-day Royal County of Berkshire Show. The two-day Dubai Duty Free International weekend got underway at Newbury Racecourse yesterday (Friday), with excitement mounting in anticipation of the start of today's big race at 2pm, the Mill Reef Stakes.

Pop group, Madness, will bring the event to a rousing close, with a party in the paddock this evening, tickets £19.80 to £40.

In Newbury, a charity coffee morning in aid of the mayor's benevolent fund and the West Berkshire Community Hospital Renal Unit, will provide a welcome break for shoppers at Newbury Town Hall, between 10am and 12pm.

For some fresh air and a leg stretcher, a heathland haven walk takes place today on Crookham Common, from 10am to 12.30pm, The two to three mile walk is suitable for ages 11 and above. Suggested donation of £3. Meet at Crookham car park, Old Thornford Road.

Sports fans can choose between a 3pm football match at Bulpit Lane, where Hungerford take on St Neots, or a rugby match, also at 3pm, at Henwick, Thatcham V Bletchley.

Those looking for something to browse should head over to Aldworth Village Market, at St Mary's Church, from 9.30am to 12pm, whilst entertainment for children can be found at Newbury library this afternoon, from 2.30pm to 3pm, with free stories for under fives.

The OktoberWest Bierfest, hosted by West Berkshire Brewery, at Tithe Barn, Yattendon, from noon to 11.30pm, offers a free pint of beer and Stein glass with entry ticket, along with live music and dancing, traditional Bavarian fare and international street food. Regular shuttle bus services are available from Pangbourne and Thatcham railway stations, £5 return.

This evening, entertainment is offered by Porchlight Smokers, at Ace Space, St Nicholas Road, from 8pm to 10.30pm. Tickets £8 in advance from the Newbury Visitor Information Centre, Hogan's Music, or online at www.acespace.org.uk. £10 on the door, if available.
