When a little bit of pain goes a long way..
THE thought of hair being ripped from their body is enough to make most of the male population wince - but 15 men selflessly offered themselves up to raise more than £500 for charity last week.
Professional therapist Caroline Seward, who trained at Newbury College, carried out the ‘lunch hour office ultimate defluff’ at the offices of ITQ, a Thatcham-based company specialising in printing.
The company hosted the event to help raise funds for the chosen charity of employee Dave Martin, who was left paralysed from the neck down and in need of 24 hour care after a car crash seven years ago.
Speaking to The Newbury Weekly News, Mrs Seward, who runs her own home-based salon in Thatcham specifically targeting men, said: “All the guys got their nostrils done, others got their legs, chest, eyebrows and ears waxed. I think they were in a it of pain but it was for a good cause. The office was buzzing and even Dave joined in, getting his nostrils done.
“Most men are really cautious to begin with and some even hang up the phone and call back, but once they experience it they generally keep coming back.”
Mrs Seward added that over the past five years the amount of men that wax has increased by over 200 per cent, with around one in three now turning to it.
Managing director of ITQ, Graham Varndell, who got his lower legs waxed, said: “I’ll admit it does feel a bit weird, but it wasn’t quite as painful as I thought it would be, I think I picked the right area.
“It was a fun day and it was worth that little it of pain to raise all that money for Dave’s charity.”
The staff of ITQ continue to support Dave in different ways and every year take part in events to raise money for his chosen charity, Aspire.
