Kingsclere Parish Council running poll to find out where it should plant a memorial oak tree for the Queen

Kingsclere Parish Council is planning to plant a tree as a memorial to the Queen and it is asking the community for help to decide where to put it.

The council is planning to plant an oak tree somewhere in or around the village as both a memorial to the late monarch and as a tribute to the links the Queen had with Kingsclere.

It is currently running a poll on its Facebook page in which local people can vote.

A Kingsclere Parish Council spokesperson said: “Oak trees famously live for many centuries so it will form a lasting message to future generations of the respect and pride that Kingsclere's residents held for Elizabeth II in 2022.

“Some of the compost for the tree will be made from the floral tributes that were laid in the village square at the time of the funeral.

“The tree's roots will truly be growing from the good wishes of Kingsclere's residents. What a special start for any tree.”

The parish council has suggested three locations – the Recreation Ground, the Holding Field and the Malthouse Open Space – but it has also encouraged those who vote to suggest anywhere else they might like to see the tree.

The spokesperson added: “Remember though that oaks grow to be exceptionally large so think about the space needed when it grows to maturity.”

Kingsclere Parish Council will announce the winning location in the new year.
