Tilehurst woman caught in Moroccan earthquake raises money for victims
A Tilehurst woman caught up in the recent Moroccan earthquake has raised money to support its victims.
Jacci Michaels and her family had to cut their holiday in September short when they became caught in the Marrakesh-Safi earthquake.
Thousands died in the natural disaster and Mrs Michaels says her hotel suffered significant damage.
She said the aftermath left an indelible mark on her and she has since raised £1,664 through a fundraiser with her daughter and her friend Shazia Fazal.
The trio held their fundraising event at the Royal British Legion in Tilehurst.
They hosted local businesses, set up stalls and held a raffle and silent auction.
The success of this charity fundraiser was celebrated by all three ladies involved, who said they were thrilled with the overwhelming response from the community.
Mrs Michaels said: “I know £1,664 won't bring back what they have lost, but even if it helps a few people, it gives me some comfort.”
Friend Shazia Fazal ran the food and cake stalls and said: “The food table alone brought in £1,000 of the total, which is absolutely amazing.”
The raised funds will be sent directly to a local Moroccan woman, whose parents are working on the ground, providing essential assistance to those who have lost almost everything in the earthquake.
